Will AI make my child a lazy thinker? What 'cognitive debt' means

The worry underneath a lot of parents’ unease about AI is a simple one: if a machine can do the thinking, will my child ever learn to do it themselves? A study out of MIT in 2025 gives that worry a name. They call it cognitive debt, and their findings are worth every parent’s attention.
The short version: the thinking you skip does not come free. It gets borrowed against, and the bill lands later. That has real implications for how we raise children in a world where an answer is always one prompt away, and the good news is that the best protection is something you are already able to give a three year old.
What the MIT study actually found
Researchers at the MIT Media Lab asked 54 people to write essays while wearing EEG caps that measured their brain activity. One group used ChatGPT, one used a search engine, and one used nothing but their own head. They tracked them across four months.
The results were sobering. The AI group showed the weakest brain connectivity of the three, the least mental engagement with their own work. They felt little ownership over the essays they produced, and many could not quote a single line from something they had written minutes earlier. When those same people were later asked to write without the tool, their brains stayed under-engaged, as though the habit of offloading had left a groove.
That is the cognitive debt. The AI produced a finished essay, but the thinking that essay was supposed to build never happened, so nothing was left behind in the writer’s own mind.
Why this matters more for a young child
An adult who leans on AI is spending down a lifetime of thinking skills already banked. A young child has not banked them yet. They are being built right now, in the years before school, through exactly the effortful, slightly frustrating mental work that AI is so good at removing.
Harvard’s Ying Xu puts the worry plainly. The real question, she says, is whether children can still do the hard thing once the tool is taken away. A child who never wrestles with a problem, never sits in the discomfort of not knowing, never pushes through to their own answer, misses the reps that grow a thinking brain.
And parents can feel it coming. In a large study from the Alan Turing Institute and the LEGO Foundation, more than three quarters of parents said they worried their children would be too trusting of AI and stop thinking critically about what it tells them. Their teachers shared the concern.
The defence is built early, and it is not high-tech
The reassuring news is concrete. The antidote to cognitive debt is not a better app or an earlier start on coding, but the deeply human thinking habits a young child grows through ordinary play and conversation: the ability to focus, the urge to ask why, the patience to stay with something hard, and the discernment to ask whether an answer is actually true.
These are the human strengths a screen can’t teach, and three to five is when the ground is softest for growing them. A child who learns to think hard and enjoy it will use AI as a tool later, not a crutch, because they will know the difference between having an answer and understanding one.
You grow this the low-tech way. Let them puzzle over something before you rescue them. Ask questions you do not answer for them. Protect the boredom that forces them to invent. It is the same thinking behind why play is how young children actually learn: the effort is not the obstacle to learning, it is the learning.
