Your child is growing up with AI: what the numbers say

If it feels like AI went from science fiction to part of daily life in about two years, that is because it did. Your three year old will never remember a world without it. The useful question is no longer whether they will grow up with AI, but what you can do in these early years to make sure they grow up its master rather than its dependent. The numbers make the case for starting now.
AI is already everywhere Australians look
In the March 2026 quarter, 13.6 million Australians used an AI tool in a typical four-week period, according to Roy Morgan. That is 58% of everyone aged 14 and over. ChatGPT alone reached 45% of the population. This is not a niche any more. It is the water we are all swimming in.
The Australian Digital Inclusion Index puts recent generative AI use at around 45% of Australians, and rising fastest among the young. Whatever you make of that, it is the backdrop to your child’s whole life.
And it has already reached the kids
Children are not waiting for adulthood to start. The Alan Turing Institute and LEGO Foundation found that nearly a quarter of children aged 8 to 12 have already used generative AI, most of them at least once a month, with ChatGPT the favourite. By the teens it is the clear majority: Australia’s eSafety Commissioner found close to 78% of 10 to 17 year olds have used an AI assistant.
Read those two numbers together and the trend line is obvious. By the time your toddler is ten, using AI will be as ordinary as using a search engine is today. That is not cause for panic. It is cause for preparation.
The catch hidden in the data
One finding in the data is worth pausing on. The Turing research found a sharp divide in who is already using these tools: about 52% of children at private schools, against just 18% at state schools. The Digital Inclusion Index tells a similar story across income, education, disability and First Nations communities, and warns that AI could deepen the digital gaps we already have.
The lesson is not that you must rush your three year old onto AI to keep up. The children racing ahead on the tools are not the ones with the real advantage. The real advantage belongs to the child who arrives at AI with a strong mind already in place: able to focus, to question, to tell a good answer from a plausible one. What to actually do about it
The instinct, faced with numbers like these, is to get your child started early on the technology. The better move is almost the opposite. Spend the early years building the human foundations that make someone good with AI later, because those are the parts that take years to grow and cannot be downloaded.
That means protecting attention in a world designed to fragment it, feeding the curiosity that makes a child want to understand rather than just be told, and growing the discernment to ask whether something is true.
